Why Does Creativity Belong in Science?
In the minds of most individuals, science is all about laboratories, microscopes, equations, and data. On the contrary, art is characterized by paint brushes, music, and creativity. However, while it may appear that both areas are totally incompatible at first look, science and creativity are actually entirely linked.
Novel discoveries in science come from a single question, which can be summarized in one phrase—"What if?" That same drive is behind all the discoveries made by creative artists, who come up with novel thoughts, test various methods, and produce something unique.
Creativity plays a huge role during each step of scientific discovery. Scientists always create new experiments, solve unforeseen problems, and find new ways of testing their hypotheses. Advancements in medicine like MRIs, robot surgery, and immunotherapy were achieved due to the fact that scientists had approached old issues in a new way.
In addition, art helps in presenting science. There are many scientific issues that are hard to explain using simple language. Various illustrations, animations, infographics, etc. help to explain complex theories. During the COVID-19 epidemic, various graphics became available for everyone to learn how viruses spread and the importance of vaccinations. Good graphic design transforms complex research into accessible information.
Creativity in medicine is much broader than just research. Music, painting, and many other types of art are used in hospitals, as creative processes help to alleviate stress and enable self-expression, thus bringing comfort to patients who endure tough treatment. Although art cannot treat disease, it will certainly assist patients in feeling more joyful and comfortable.
This is especially true for children suffering from cancer. Indeed, pediatric patients spend hours in the hospital going through tests and treatment. In such circumstances, the art program allows patients to communicate their feelings, which might be hard to put into words, and gives patients an opportunity to restore their normality and control.
For centuries now, many scientists have been embracing their creative side beyond the laboratory. For example, Leonardo da Vinci merged art and anatomy to produce extremely detailed paintings of human anatomy. Nobel Prize winners in various scientific fields have been known as musicians, painters, and writers, indicating that analysis and creativity complement each other rather than contradict each other. Observation skills and imagination serve scientists and artists equally well.
Through science, we acquire the information that enables us to better our world; creativity allows us to think of ways to bring about those changes. Innovation, hope, and discovery all come as a result of these two things working together. What will lead to the next great medical discovery may not be scientific knowledge alone, but asking a new, creative question.
